Bake A Cake (I Knew You Were Coming)

Bake a cake, then kneel in front of the oven watching it bake. Wearing a scarlet lingerie set, holding a red mug covered in hearts.

Are we really half way through February already? That can only mean it’s time to say Happy Valentine’s day! But can I do that through baking? I was tasked with something very special recently. He asked me to bake a cake that represents my submission. I had to make it ambitious and spectacular.

To bake a cake is easy, but making it a work of art with a message?

There was the usual inner turmoil, a moments self doubt. Ambitious I could do, spectacular… I would have to work really hard there. And representing my submission through something which will mostly be in my children’s lunchboxes. No liquorice lace floggers or moulded chocolate dildos! I’m going to be vague on the details here, because the cake itself isn’t the point of the post.

I broke the decorations and bake of the cake into mini tasks.

There was something I have wanted to make for a very long time, just because that’s the kind of person I am. And while I was perusing google there was something else that stuck out at me, which also tied into the first. Then there was a tub of cream in the reduced section which I picked up and decided to add another new step to the process. By the time I was ready to start baking the cake my kitchen was like a sugar palace and I was starting to get even more nervous about assembly.

Though I’d given myself enough time to start over if it was shocking!

With some new underwear and a mug of tea in hand it seemed like a good idea to get (nearly) naked and settle. Do any of you watch Great British Bake Off? The contestants are often seen kneeling on the floor. Caught on camera, impatiently watching their baking creation through the glass door. This was me, although I was in a state of undress. Unlike those poor souls on the television forced to wear… clothes… in an often sweltering heat.

So, there I was, comfortably attired, waiting for the vessel-of-thoughts to finish baking. Then I would be able to show him what my submission means to me in a way that he knows I will enjoy. And to bake a cake from scratch, and decorate it in a way that stretches my skills, is possibly the most romantic thing I can think to do. Which means this is very much the right way to say Happy Valentine’s Day!
