It barely seems possible that we are already 2 weeks into 2021. I guess it is time to pick up where I left off, which was three years and three weeks ago, on the big day itself. Christmas 2017 was unlike any other, well, in my experience anyway. But that was more or less the way that my life was developing by this time. So many new experiences, mostly living outside of the expectations which were the bread and butter of my upbringing and marriage. And so it was, when the turning of the year came around. Pie had invited for his kinky new year’s eve, a celebration with friends. I had every intention of attending. But when I woke on the morning, with a splitting headache, I made the decision that a gentle day was in order.

So instead of spending the day preparing for a thrashing in company I took myself to the moors and wandered around a couple of reservoirs. The crisp, clean air filling my lungs was beautiful, calm and restorative. Upon my return home I felt (almost) human again. Having explained the situation in the morning Pain had said the party option was still available to me, but I was still not feeling it, so I came up with a plan.

An exceptionally kinky New Year’s Eve celebration for one!

Really, it didn’t involve much partying. Well, not in the traditional sense. No surprises there, huh? Christmas had been so busy I’d been neglecting my rope practise. My decision then, was to get all of my ropes out, condition them, and create as many ties as I possibly could. As an introvert this was the perfect exit to 2017. Or should I say that is how it felt to me at the time? And I certainly wouldn’t change a moment. Perhaps this was the first time I had actively chosen to rest over pushing through. A landmark day as not recognising my need for rest is one bad habit that plagues me still.

Pottering with the ropes- conditioning, tying and hanking- was almost meditative.

Each skein required some TLC. Lovingly oiled, baked and used in turn, the to-do pile became a neatly ordered and stored collection. Over the two nights of self-bondage I made a conscious effort to think back over my year in both rope, and kink. Embedding my 2017 learning, each tie was a revisit; simple enough to be completed quickly, cleanly and without stress. A great way to see off a year that was the exact opposite of the ropework I completed.

And the people and experiences from the year? I’ve shared a fair number of my stories already, but there are many more to tell. In a year where I almost crashed completely, it was the wilderness and the people who got me out the other side. And then there are the people who, in my haste to write through the challenges, I’ve neglected to introduce. All in good time, but I will tell their stories as appropriate. Whether they are platonic play friends, lovers or questionable booty calls.

But now it is time to move onwards. To 2018, and what a year that would turn out to be!
