Back in 2019 I worked with Dark Venice. I love being naked in the forest and he was hoping to include some “Damsel in Distress” shots for his (and my) portfolio. A match made in heaven for a fun shoot, exploring Dartmoor in the rain as lockdown restrictions were easing.
Looking at our photos I don’t get the vibe that I’m a Damsel in distress. One of the many reasons why anonymous photography is so much better for me is that my face shares exactly how I feel. And when I’ve tied myself to the roots of an upturned tree, shoot or not, I’m going to feel fierce.
And that reminds me of a quote.
A quote, from an unknown writer, which explains why so many D-types struggle with me.
“Don’t fashion me into a maiden that needs saving from a dragon. I am the dragon and I will eat you whole.”
It’s not that I’m not submissive, I am… Deeply. More that I am fiercely independent and plenty capable of being me, unapologetically driving myself forward. Just like S empowered me to do. And anyone who tried to make me dependent on them is going to get pretty short shrift. Because dragons can’t be tamed by being squashed. They need to be nurtured and given space. Space to flap their wings, breathe fire, soar above the tree tops.
