Flagpoles And Fountains

On our trip to North Devon, which I believe I’ve mentioned once or twice, SWL and I went on a bit of a mission to create some fun memories centring around the Scavenger Hunt. Having seen and attempted the row flagpoles along the harbour wall we had all but given up on that idea for the day. Even with the steely grey weather the throngs of jolly tourists were happily spoiling our fun!

After finding some driftwood, we found a little cafe and thawed out over a pot of tea.

Across the carpark and adjoining road was what appeared to be a visitor centre. Obviously it required closer inspection. It was the water fountain that caught our attention. We were unsure whether it was meant to be gushing like that or if something untoward was going on.

It turned out to be intentional. And also more than “just” an exhibition. It was also the start point for walks up the gorge. Here is what the Visit Lynton and Lynmouth Site has to say:

Giggling at the squirting water we wondered whether to go into the museum for that location. Bliss, SWL’s dog, was with us, and unwelcome to go inside, so we looked from a distance. Before long we noticed something else. The museum wasn’t the only find we could make use of. I strode into the yard, to take a closer look at the signage, and waited for the coast to clear. There were four directions for traffic to come from and some straggling holiday makers.

I’m not the only scavenger that has hunted down flagpoles.

I love how the hunt brings people together; whether it brings virtual strangers together or takes friendships in different directions, that’s a pretty special thing!
