It’s that time of the month again. No, not that time! It’s prompt week for Sinful Sunday. This month is From Above, and knowing that SWL and I were off to Lanzarote for Christmas I decided to combine the prompt with a planned walk where we would climb a volcano and I could share my boobs (and holiday) with the Scavenger Hunt. This soon became a focus for our trip, having been inspired by Sub Bee who bagged the location in Iceland, shortly before the eruptions. However, unlike Bee’s Volcano, ours would be the 3000 year old, extinct Caldera Blanca, passing the smaller Montana Calderata on the way.
However, ascending the larger volcano eluded us. The scree slopes took SWL back to a misadventure some years past, so we turned around. Was I disappointed not to reach the rim, take this picture? No! It just means there were babysteps to take, confidence needed building, and then… then we would visit, climb and conquer a bigger Volcano. Or perhaps I will be able to bag a Mountain for my hunt at some point? Or both!
On the way to the ascent we’d passed through the lava fields, before poking our noses in to a lower crater. As we retraced our steps we decided to take a proper look in there, with the heat of the day we would have been reluctant to stop after submitting the main attraction. But inside we found life. In this barren, apparently inhospitable landscape there were birds, lizards, insects. SNAILS! Not to mention the plants. I certainly spent longer than is healthy, enjoying a new (to me) member of the Euphorbia family. Did I know at the time that it is the national vegetable of Lanzarote? No, but I sure did enjoy seeing it in a variety of stages of its life cycle.
The crater of this smaller Volcano was such a special place. Barely anyone stopped to explore the ecosystem within. Preferring instead to clamber up and around the rim, or bypassing altogether to reach its big Sister.
We decided to try my idea out, to bag my boobs in the Volcano location with SWL above me. She took a lot of pictures, finally settling on one that didn’t have her shadow in shot. But you know something…? I love that you can see her reaching up, up and away, focusing downwards on my reclining form.
There is more to come from the trip… You didn’t think it would be this and the aeroplane did you? SWL and I away for a week and only two pictures to share? More importantly than the photos I’ll share, my soul is warm. And I’m all set for a productive new year.
