Crawling Alone

You need to spend time crawling alone through shadows to truly appreciate what it is to stand in the sun.

 Shaun Hick

Life is never simple, easy or otherwise straightforward. For me, at least. But I’m sure I’m not alone. Sometimes I stop, pause for thought before sauntering off on my way. Other times I’m floored. It takes me a while to get back up again. But Shaun Hick is right, in my experience. (Possibly why this is the second time I’ve used this poignant quote.) Once I’ve been crawling alone for a spell I can truly appreciate the beauty of the world around me. Not only the forest floor, when I am inspired to look up again, to the big skies, I inhale the lushness of life as I do the fresh air around me.

Though now, I’m not crawling alone anymore. Not unless I want to, which sometimes I do. But there is always someone in my corner, a light in the dusk that clouds my mind. Or maybe my friends are the predawn light, waiting with me for my sunrise. And then we can stand in the sunshine together, after the long, dark night.

I like that thought.
